Peter is Restored

Welcome to the Peter Is Restored family devotional. Peter promised Jesus that he would never abandon Him, but Jesus warned Peter, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” Just as Jesus predicted, Peter denied Him three times that evening.

But Jesus’ love for Peter didn’t end because of his denials. Instead, Jesus showed Peter that he was forgiven and gave him the opportunity to be restored. Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” and Peter replied three times, “You know that I do.” Jesus forgave and restored Peter, calling him to a new life of following God!

Family Bible Reading
DO YOU LOVE ME?

15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”

“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.

16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”

“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.

17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

Discussion Questions

After you have watched the Bible video and completed your family Bible reading discuss the following questions. Use the drop down icons for additional insights.

1. Why do you think Peter denied Jesus?

Peter felt pressure to be silent from people who hated Jesus. Not everyone who hears about Jesus decides to follow Him. In fact, many will hate Jesus and His followers because of what we believe
(John 15:18-25).

2. Why did Jesus ask Peter 3 times “Do you love me?”

Peter had denied Jesus three times (John 18:13-27). Jesus gave Peter the opportunity to reverse his denials 3 times with a true profession of faith.

3. What does it mean to follow Jesus?

Following Jesus is what it means to be a disciple. We follow Jesus by learning his teachings, living by his example and making God the most important thing in our life.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, thank You that You restore us even when we deny You and go our own way. Help us to always remember your great love for us, especially in our times of failure. We ask these things in Jesus’ name, Amen.
